WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
Capitol Reef National Park has been known for decades as “The Land of the Sleeping Rainbow!”
According to local folklore, the name “Land of the Sleeping Rainbow” is attributed to a Navajo man working at a dude ranch now within the park boundary near Pleasant Creek. Lurt and Alice Knee, the owners of the property, found the name very fitting in describing the colorful rock layers in the area. They went on to adopt the name, Sleeping Rainbow Ranch, and offered Jeep tours of their own.
Over time, the name has evolved to cover the entire Capitol Reef National Park area. In addition to the distinct and vibrant rock layers, the term Sleeping Rainbow is perfect at describing the daily changes in color that occur, especially at sunrise and sunset, and the seasonal changes that occur with spring wildflowers, summer storms, and fall foliage.
Come and see the diverse terrain and the spectrum of desert colors for yourself!
